LLM in Law & Government

Dual LLM in Law & Government and International Legal Studies

Upon the successful completion of 24 credit hours, LLM candidates enrolled in the Program on Law & Government may apply to WCL's LLM in International Legal Studies Program (ILSP). If admitted, students will consult with the ILSP director to determine a course of study for meeting the requirements of a second LLM, which will be earned after an additional 16 credits. For more information, contact ILSP at llminfo@wcl.american.edu, or 202-274-4114.

Dual LLM Degree with University of Hull Law School in Great Britain

The LLM Program on Law and Government has a cooperative agreement with the University of Hull Law School in England for dual LLM degrees for students enrolling in both programs. Participating students would receive LLM degrees from both American University and the University of Hull after completing two-thirds of the total credit requirements normally required by each institution in satisfaction of its LLM program. For WCL purposes, two-thirds of the total credit requirements will be 16 credit hours. Students are responsible for paying for all 16 credit hours taken at WCL. It is recommended that students complete the 16 credit hours over one semester and one summer, but other arrangements can be made based on an individual's schedule.

The law school at Hull is well-regarded and highly ranked in the national rankings of British research institutions. It has a number of specialists in European Public Law, and publishes a journal in that field. The dual LLM program would allow a student interested in Law and Government to apply for an LLM in European Public Law from Hull. Again, the key feature of the dual LLM program is that a student could get both degrees by completing 2/3 of the credit requirements required for each degree. However, a student won't receive either degree until he or she has completed the requirements for both.

For more information and application details on the dual LLM degree please contact the Program on Law and Government.
