From May 30-June 27, 2010, the American University Washington College of Law will hold the first Summer Law Program in Israel. The program will rotate among Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jerusalem. Participating U.S. law students will receive six credits for successfully completing two courses during the program: Rights, Liberties and Environment; and Intellectual Property and High Tech Law. The first course will explore the complexities of the salient issues in Israel today, including the de jure and de facto realities of the Palestinian minority and Jewish majority; the status and influence of religious law; the role of courts and constitutionalism; rights-based approaches to environmental concerns; and the impact of NGOs. The second course will discuss issues including patents and generics, copyright law, cyberlaw, and the impact of free trade agreements.
The courses will be taught by well-known experts from premier Israeli and Palestinian universities and NGOs and overseen by members of the WCL faculty. In addition, students will participate in site visits and will visit the Supreme Court of Israel, the Knesset and other key legal institutions. Students will also have the chance to participate in excursions to renowned tourist sites including the Dead Sea and Massada. The program is currently pending accreditation by the American Bar Association. More information.
