ILSP Alumni Dinners

The International Legal Studies Program has held several alumni reunion dinners in South and Central America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Dean Claudio Grossman and other WCL Professors often travel around the world to meet with ILSP alumni. Invitations to the reunion dinners are posted through the alumni listserv and are open to all alums. Past reunions have been held in various locations such as Geneva, Madrid, Beijing, Tokyo, Singapore, Thailand, Bogota, Austra, Tunisia, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Chile, and many other cities! AUSTRIA

On September 28th, 2007 the Austrian Alumni Association met at the ‘Rote Bar’ restaurant in the Hotel Sacher in Vienna. Organizer Dr. Maria Fernanda Perez Solla, LLM 2000, was joined by her husband Gerhard Gunz, LLM 2000, Tejal Jesrani, JD 2006, who works for the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime and her fiancé Reinhard Haslinger, a consultant to the World Bank in Vienna.

 

CHILE

On March 15th, 2007 while vacationing in Chile, Dean Grossman met with Chilean alumni. Pictured are Carola Canelo, LLM 2000, Roberto Kingler, Michael Grasty and Dean Claudio Grossman.


COLOMBIA

In 2006 Professor Diego Rodriguez-Pinzon met with ILSP Alumni Liaison for Colombia Pablo José Quintero, the Vice President of Academics at Javeriana University, Mr. Jairo Cifuentes, and Moot Court Competition contestants from Venezuela.

In late October, Professor Diego Rodriguez-Pinzon visited Bogota to meet with Colombian alumni and observe the Human Rights Moot Court Competition at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. At the reception following the competition, Professor Rodriguez-Pinzon met with some of the Colombian Supreme Court Justices.


COSTA RICA

On July 17th,2007 Dean Claudio Grossman met with Costa Rican alumni in San Jose for an alumni dinner at ‘El Chicote’ restaurant. Dean Grossman was in Costa Rica to attend the International Institute of Human Rights, which is the most important scholarly and training human rights institute in the Americas. Attendees included Carolina Mauri, LLM 1996, Douglas Alvarado, LLM 1995, Rommy Claros, LLM 2003, Luis Sibaja, LLM 1998, Francisco Rivera (JD 2003) and his guest Alexandra Bradley (2L), Giovanny Peraza, LLM 1990, Ronald Garita, LLM 1991, Alejandro Antillón, LLM 1996, Monica Navarro, LLM 1995, Jorge Guzman, LLM 1996, Rocío Montes-de-Oca, LLM 1995, and JosePabloSanchez, a current student. Also attending was Jerry Ledin, a member of the board ofdirectors of the Centro Cultural CostarricenseNorteamericano.


DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

On July 18th, 2007 Dean Grossman met with alumni from the Dominican Republic for dinner at Pat’e Palo in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. Dean Grossman was in the Dominican Republic to give a lecture on freedom of expression at the Inter-American Press Association's Hemispheric Conference. The ILSP Alumni Liaison for the Dominican Republic, Mario Pujols, gave Dean Grossman gifts of cigars and Dominican music and arranged the three course menu. Dean Grossman told the alumni about recent developments at WCL and discussed ideas about how to raise awareness of American University throughout the Dominican Republic. Alumni reported that the food was great and that a good time was had by all.

February 26, 2008 saw a grand reunion of 38 Indonesian alumni at the Marriott Hotel in Jakarta. Professor Bradlow and the reunion host and organizer, Suria Nataadmadja, LLM 1987, met with alumni for a seven course Chinese dinner, with some alumni having traveled great distances from all over Indonesia for the occasion. Professor Bradlow also took the opportunity to give a lecture on Training Law Students to be Transnational Lawyers at the University of Indonesia School of Law. The ILSP would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Suria Nataadmadja and his team at Suria Nataadmadja & Associates for all the planning and organization that went into the making the dinner run smoothly and successfully.

JAPAN

On July 13th, 2007 Professor Jeffrey Lubbers met with the Japanese Alumni Association in Tokyo, and was joined by Gina Mendez, LLM 1984 Bolivia, and Keiko Tominaga, a potential LLM student and former ILSP intern (both pictured). Ms. Mendez has recently been working as an intern for the Japan International Cooperation Agency and is a former mayor of Santa Cruz and a former member of the Bolivian parliament. Ms. Tominaga is currently working on copyright issues for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The dinner took place at ‘Takara’ restaurant amid bad weather caused by a typhoon that had just missed Tokyo. Other attendees included Chuck Ito, Masafumi Ono, LLM 2001, Yuji Onuki, LLM 1994, Kentaro Murata, LLM 2002, Professor Tomo Kugisawa of Omiya Law School, LLM 1994, and Professor Kenji Okanishi of Nihon University Law School, JD 1994

 

JAPAN

On July 29th, 2006Professor David Chavkin met with ILSP alumni in Tokyo to enjoy a kaiseki dinner at the Yamato Restaurant on the Ginza. Organized by the ILSP Alumni Liaison for Japan, Masafumi Ono (LLM 2001), other participants included Faris Cheng from the Integration Law Offices in Taipei, Nobuyuki Kosuge (LLM 2001) from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in Tokyo, and Hisaei Chuck Ito from Chuo Law School. 

 

 


JAPAN

On February 11th, 2007 Dean Grossman met with Japanese alumni in Tokyo at the washoku en restaurant. Participants included Mr.Kenji Okanishi, JD 1994, Mr. Nobuyuki Kosuge, LLM 2001, Mr. Masafumi Ono, LLM 2001, Ms. Tomoko Onishi, Fall 2007 student, Dean Masahiko Omura, Chuo Law School, Prof. Hideyuki Shigyo, Chuo Law School, Prof. Kenichi Osugi, Chuo Law School, and Prof. Nobuyuki Sato, Chuo Law School.

MEXICO

On September 28th, the Mexican Alumni Association met for dinner at the Hacienda de los Morales Restaurant in Mexico City. Organizer Francisco Velázquez Osuna, LLM 1983, was joined by 15 other Mexican alumni, including Carla Aceves Ávila, LLM 1998, Gustavo Alanis Ortega, LLM 1992, Emilio Cantú García, LLM 1999, Alejandra Goyenechea, LLM 2001, Carlos Ignacio Licona, LLM 1991, Christian Mancebo Igartúa, LLM 2001, Carlos Ortiz Mena, LLM 1992, Fernando Ortiz Proal, LLM 1996, Marcelo Páramo Fernández, LLM 1993, Héctor Samuel Peña, LLM 2001, Francisco Romero Ramos, LLM 1991, Alfonso Roqueñi Straffon, LLM 2000, Pablo Ruiz Limón, LLM 1993, Juan Pablo Vega Cruz, LLM 2006, and Addy Paola Velázquez Martín, LLM 2007.

Several alumni congratulated Mr. Velázquez Osuna on the organization of the dinner, and enjoyed meeting other Mexican alumni. There were also a great many suggestions that the dinner become a tradition and focus on altruistic intentions, such as scholarships.


SINGAPORE

On September 14th, an alumni dinner was held in Singapore with Professor Daniel Bradlow. Professor Bradlow was in Singapore to give an address to the International Monetary Fund, and made time to invite local alumni to dinner at Lei Garden, in Chijmes. Attendees included Aditya Kesha, Mickey Schiller, Songky PW (LLM 1992), and Eknuch Chayodom (LLM 1999).


TAIWAN

On January 19th, Professor Hunter held a dinner with Taiwanese alumni at Miramar Garden in Taipei. Over 20 alumni attended the dinner, which was held to coincide with Professor Hunter’s visit to the Climate Change Policy and Law Forum at Howard International House. ILSP would like to thank Lawrence Lee, Blake Wang, and William Su for their assistance in organizing the dinner.

Washington College of Law collaborated with the main campus on Saturday February 23rd, 2008 to organize an alumni dinner in Bangkok, with the help of Asanee Asavasopon, LLM 2001 and Monsicha Poolsawat (Prae), CAS 2003. The dinner was held at Boossa-Bar, a restaurant in Lumpini owned by alumni Pawin Tokakhuna, and featured an extensive buffet. Professor Bradlow and Vice President of Campus Life and Director of International Student and Scholar Services, Fanta Aw, both attended the dinner, along with approximately 60 alumni. The success of the alumni dinner has also spurred alumni to establish a formal alumni association. The ILSP would like to thank both Asanee Asavasopon and Monsicha Poolsawat for all of their hard work in organizing a highly successful alumni dinner.

 

THAILAND

On February 4th, Dean Grossman met with Thai alumni at the Salathip Restaurant at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok. Guests enjoyed a traditional Thai meal of deep-fried chicken and shrimp wrapped in Chinese pancakes, coconut and Galangal soup with Blue River prawns, and skewered baby bananas in coconut milk and were treated to a display of traditional Thai dance. Attendees included Mr. Aklavit Chongswatvorakul, LLM 2006, Mr. Weerachat Sribunma, LLM 1991, Ms. Teresa McGhie, the former Associate Director of the ILSP/Director of the Summer Program in Chile, and Ms. Asanee Asavasopon, LLM 2001.

TUNISIA

On June 27th, 2007 Professor Bradlow met with Tunisian and French alumni at ‘Au Bon Vieux Temps’ restaurant in Tunis. Professor Bradlow was in Tunisia as part of his visit to the African Development Bank and made to time to catch up with former Humphrey Fellows and LLMs alike.

URUGUAY

On June 13th, 2007 Dean Grossman met with alumni from Uruguay in Montevideo. The small but active group of alumni met at Panini’s Italian restaurant near Plaza Independence. Dean Grossman was in Uruguay to attend the Second Meeting of Government Spokespersons of the Member States of the Organization of American States, where he spoke on international standards for freedom of expression.
