Admission Requirements and Exams


In order to apply candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a field related to international affairs, government, political science, journalism or another field related to human rights. Hold a law degree either from a U.S. law school accredited by the American Bar Association or from a foreign law school with equivalent standards.
  • Be enrolled in a law degree program at a U.S. law school accredited by the American Bar Association or at a foreign law school with equivalent standards and have completed the first year.
  • Exceptions: Persons with direct experience in the human rights field that do not hold a degree in a human rights related field. The Committee will review academic and professional experience as well as the statement of interest in order to determine if the applicant is a good candidate for the Academy

Enrollment Status

 

Diploma

This option is only available for persons who already hold a law degree. Participants must enroll in a minimum of 3 courses and must take the exams.

Certificate of Attendance

This option is for persons interested in the The Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law who are not law students in the United States or licensed lawyers. It is also available for those who are but do not wish to take exams. Special arrangements can be made for international students interested in taking these courses for academic credit in their home countries.

American Bar Association Credit

Current law students enrolled in universities in the U.S. can register in any of our courses and receive academic credit recognized at their institutions. All courses are ABA approved. Students accepted into an L.L.M. Program at WCL, or those planning to apply, may transfer these credits towards their degree.

Exams

 

Exams are only mandatory for Diploma seekers, ABA credit seekers and participants transferring credits to their universities in their home countries or participants whose sponsors require them to do so.

Exam period will be from June 15 to July 10. Students will retrieve and submit exams electronically; therefore they can leave DC anytime after June 14th. Each student will determine when to retrieve each exam. Each exam must be completed and submitted within a 48 hour timeframe. All exams must be completed by midnight EST on July 10.
