Admission
The Academy is designed as a Graduate Certificate Program. To apply, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
- Hold a law degree either from a U.S. law school accredited by the American Bar Association or from a foreign law school with equivalent standards;
- Be enrolled in a law degree program at a U.S. law school accredited by the American Bar Association or at a foreign law school with equivalent standards and have completed the first year.
- Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in fields related to international affairs, government and political science, journalism, or any other field related to human rights;
If you are planning to take courses in English, you may apply to the Academy either for academic credit or for a Certificate of Attendance. Those who plan to take courses in Spanish may apply only for a Certificate of Attendance. For information on how to apply, see Procedures and Registration Information.
Application for Credits toward an LL.M. Degree in International Legal Studies at American University Washington College of Law
Participants in the Master Program on International Legal Studies Academy at American University Washington College of Law may apply up to four credits toward their LL.M. degree if they register for academic credits. Those taking courses for a Certificate of Attendance are not eligible for this benefit.
Language Proficiency
Those applicants applying to take English courses and whose first language
is not English must provide us with a minimum TOEFL score of 580 (237 computer
base), Michigan test score of 74, or a written certificate of proficiency
from an accredited language institute. This requirement is waived for applicants
who hold a degree from an accredited U.S. institution. Applicants to Spanish
courses whose first language is not Spanish must provide us with a written
certificate of proficiency from an accredited institute.
Right to Revise
The statements and provisions contained herein are not to be regarded as an irrevocable contract between an applicant for admission to the law school or a law student and American University. The Washington College of Law reserves the right to cancel or reschedule courses as necessary.
Program Changes and Withdrawals
Applicants who have registered or paid a deposit will be informed promptly of any changes in the Academy's course offerings and, in the unlikely event of a course cancellation, will receive a full refund for the course (excluding the application fee of $85.00 which is non-refundable).
Applicants who have registered or paid a deposit should notify us immediately in case of withdrawal. Students who have registered to receive academic credit must also contact the Office of the Registrar for information about withdrawal forms and deadlines.
