Application Process and Course Registration

Who is eligible for the summer program?

Any person who holds a law degree, in a field related to international affairs, government, political science, journalism or another field related to human rights. The degree must be from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association or from a foreign law school with equivalent standards.

Any person who has completed the first year of his or her law degree program and is currently enrolled in that program in a U.S ABA accredited institution, or in a foreign institution with similar standards.

If there is an applicant with sufficient experience on the human rights field and who has demonstrated sufficient interest in the field will be accepted depending on the participant’s letter of interest of the application package. See more information about eligibility.

When is the application deadline?

The last day to apply is May 4th, 2008. However, you must keep in mind that this will only allow you 2 weeks to process your Visa. If you decide to apply later than this date you may do so by paying an expedited application fee of $100 instead of $65 dollars. Applicants who apply late will not be guaranteed to have their books on the first day of class. Everyone should have paid the courses by May 19th.

When the academy does start receiving applications?

November 1st, 2007.

When do participants register for courses?

After submitting all your application materials the academy reviews them and once you are accepted you will receive an acceptance letter and the courses you requested will be automatically registered. This applies only for Certificate of Attendance, and Diploma.

Is there an Orientation?

Yes, Orientation will be held on Monday May 26, 2008. Please consider arriving on time since orientation and welcome reception are mandatory.

Is there an application, recommendations, or formal essay required for WCL students to enroll in the academy?

No, this is only for participants who are applying for the Certificate of Attendance or Diploma.

How should application be sent?

We encourage participants to apply by using our online application since it is the easiest and most effective method. However, participants may also print out the application forms and send them via regular mail.

Where can I find more information about the Summer Academy and the prerequisites for the courses?

Our webpage contains useful information for courses and admission requirements

Visa Information

I don't hold a valid visa for the States, how prompt can I get the invitation letter so that I can immediately process the visa application?

Applicants who do not hold a B1/B2 (Tourist/Business) should consider applying as soon as the academy begins receiving applications. Once accepted, participants will receive the letters of invitation, and admission to the program normally required by the U.S consulates. The processing of Visas may take up to 6 months for which participants should also contact their corresponding U.S consulate promptly.

What type of visa should the participant apply for?

Given the structure of the program, participants are most likely to be eligible for a B-1 visa. This program is not an exchange program and does not lead to a degree, so participants should not apply for an F-1 visa. Click here to find more about Visa Requirements.

What are the costs for taking the courses?

Costs vary depending on the type of program option the participant wants to enroll.

Course Load

How is the course schedule arranged?

Although our schedule is subject to change, as a general overview of the course schedule there are eight classes to choose from during the morning and eight or nine during the afternoon. Half of these courses are in Spanish, and the other half are in English. Please note that not all courses start at the same date. Each class is about 1 hour and 50 minutes or longer. The morning classes are consecutive starting at 8:30 the first and ending at 12:20 PM (depending on the course) the second one. The first afternoon class starts at 2:30 PM and the last class at 6:20 PM although there might additional be that end at 7:15 PM.

Are there any online courses?

Since the purpose of the summer program is to immerse students in the subject of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and to establish links among students all of the classes require the presence of the participant, there are no online courses available at this time.

Does the program require full-time commitment?

The summer program is an intensive program since participants and professors have two to three weeks to learn and cover all the material.

What is the difference between the Certificate of Assistance, Courses for Credit, and Diploma?

The certificate of Assistance is based on the participant’s assistance to the classes and is not required to take exams although exams may be required for participants transferring credits to their university in their home country or if sponsor requires this.

The Diploma costs $3,500 and exams are mandatory for ALL the courses that the participant chooses to register. Participant must register at least 64 hours of class, which can be achieved by taking two 14 day courses and one 7-day course. A fourth course would be included in these costs.

ABA Academic credit option is for students who are currently enrolled for their LLM degree at American University Washington College of Law.

How are participants graded?

This varies according to the course and the professor. However, participants are expected to attend to 90% of the class hours to receive the Certificate of Attendance and take exams to receive academic credit or diploma.

Housing

What housing options are available?

The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law does not provide housing for participants nor do we endorse any particular option. However, we have a special arrangement with AU Housing in which participants can stay at the residence halls for a reduced rate.

What does university housing includes?

Residence halls are very basic accommodations including only beds, desks and dressers. These accommodations usually include single or shared rooms and shared bathrooms.

How does it work?

Participants would need to apply for Summer Housing closer to the beginning of the 2008 Summer Program. Participants may contact the American University Summer Conference Housing, by e-mailing summerhousing@american.edu or by calling 202.885.3370.
