Celebration to honor Dean Grossman as recently elected Chair of the UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies

Please join the Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in celebrating Dean Grossman's recent appointment as Chair of the United Nations human rights treaty bodies. The reception will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 4:30pm in the Dean’s Suite, Room 370, WCL, 4801 Massachusetts Ave NW.

On Monday, May 20, 2013, Dean Grossman was elected Chair of the United Nations human rights treaty bodies for a one-year term. The ten treaty bodies are composed of 172 independent experts. Their functions include receiving reports of States Parties to the respective conventions, adopt concluding observations to assist States to comply with conventional obligations, decide cases concerning allegations of human rights violations, perform visits in loco to countries, adopt general comments interpreting legal obligations, and adopt urgent measures to afford protection in urgent cases.

This is an important recognition of Dean Grossman's contribution to the advancement of human rights, and a great tribute to the distinct standing of our law school in the field of human rights law. These moments deserve celebration and recognition. So please join us in toasting Dean Grossman on this great achievement.
