On September 6, 2012, American University Washington College of Law hosted an expert panel discussion on the human rights impact of the UNCPRD, featuring Ron McCallum, Chair of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Professor of Law at the University of Sydney Law School.  Other speakers included Mary Crock, Professor of Public Law at the University of Sydney Law School; John Wodatch, former Director of the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division’s Section on Disability Rights; and WCL Professor Robert Dinerstein, Associate Dean for Experiential Education and the Director of the Disability Rights Law Clinic.  Topics included the role of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, recent constructive dialogues on the Committee, the interplay between humanitarian law and the CRPD, as well as the prospects of U.S. ratification of the Convention. Click here for a full program agenda and for more information about the speakers.

During his visit, Prof. McCallum also met with the first cohort of the Center's new Disability and Human Rights Fellows Program. The program is the first of its kind, focused on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and its integration into national and local law. The program, funded by the OPen Society Foundation, was developed and is being co-directed by Prof. Robert Dinerstein, director of the WCL Disability Law Clinic, and Hadar Harris, executive director of the Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Law. WCL is one of six universities around the world participating in this new program in its inaugural year.
