AUWCL alumna successfully argues for recognition of social and economic rights in Israel

February 28, 2012

On Tuesday, February 28, the Israeli Supreme Court issued a ruling declaring social and economic rights equal to civil and political rights. The high court invalidated a law banning receipt of government assistance by anyone with access to a car, unanimously finding that the law violated the Israeli Constitution and human rights law. A WCL alumna, Sawsan Zaher (LLM 2004), who was a fellow in the Israel-US Civil Liberties Law Program founded by Center Co-Director Professor Herman Schwartz, litigated the case with Adalah, an organization founded by fellow WCL alumus Hassan Jabareen (also a former US-Israel Civil Liberties Law Fellow).
