Teach About Genocide in Local Area High-schools

Each semester, the Center hosts a two-day training for the Genocide Teaching Project. On the first day of the training, the volunteers will go through a lesson simulation in order to gain familiarity with the lesson plan. On the second day, the Executive Director of the Center, Hadar Harris, provides background information on the genocide in Rwanda and Darfur, Sudan as well as information on the Genocide Convention. High school teachers from area schools are also brought in to give the volunteers teaching tips.

The Center seeks WCL students to help teach about genocide in DC-area schools as part of the Genocide Teaching Project. The project began in spring 2004 and includes sections on the 1994 Rwanda genocide as well as the current genocide in Sudan.

Educating young people about genocide is a key factor in combating complacency and preventing future genocides. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in human rights education. Please note that this is not a large time commitment and no prior teaching experience is required. Volunteer positions are open to all WCL students, and all volunteers will be trained and provided with a lesson plan.
