Disability Rights
The Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law has been a leading force for discussion around disability rights and the UNCRPD. The Center has developed a role in bridging between the disability rights community and the human rights community for enhanced implementation and expanded adoption of the UNCRPD. Since 2007, the Center has convened important discussions every year around the UNCRPD, its adoption, ratification, and implementation. In addition to smaller panel discussions, these have included:
- April 2007: From United Nations Consensus to State Implementation: How An International Convention May Impact the Rights of People with Disabilities
- March 2008: International and US Perspectives on Implementation of the New UN Disability Rights Convention
- November 2009: Strategic Litigation to Forward the Implementation of the CRPD Through Regional Human Rights Mechanisms
- September 2011: Trafficking and Violence Against Women and Girls with Disabilities
In addition, the law school has at least two student publications—the AU International Law Review and the Human Rights Brief—that publish student and academic work on a variety of international law issues that can include discussions of the UNCRPD. In particular, the Human Rights Brief has published several articles on the US view of signing and ratifying the Convention during the Bush Administration.
