Corruption remains a serious problem in Nigeria. While its destabilizing effects are widely recognized, it also poses specific threats to women’s rights. On November 29, 2005, the Women and International Law program hosted a discussion with Esther Onwuzuruike of Nigeria, who discussed the impact of corruption on women’s advancement in Nigeria.

Ms. Onwuzuruike has focused her legal career on issues of women’s rights and anti-corruption, and has worked with the UNDP Inspectorate General of Government (IGG) for the Uganda Anti-Corruption Agency. She has worked to mainstream corruption and gender into IGG functions and has also worked to raise awareness of sexual harassment, sexual abuses of women living in refugee camps, and the increased threat of HIV/AIDS among young girls due to incest and rape. She is currently an LLM student in the International Legal Studies Program.
