Anti-Torture Initiative Conducts Outreach Visit in Tunisia
Between January 15-19, 2013 the Anti-Torture Initiative (ATI) is conducting an informal fact-finding and outreach visit in the Republic of Tunisia. ATI researchers will meet with international and local civil society organizations to examine the human rights situation in the state. The ATI will look at the progress that Tunisia has made in adopting the 2011 recommendations of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, Juan E. Méndez, particularly in such areas as legislative, constitutional, and institutional reform. The visit will serve as a foundation for future collaboration, capacity-building, and assessment activities of the Special Rapporteur on Torture in Tunisia, and additional states.
