Metrorail, Metrobus & AU shuttle service

Taking Metrorail & Metrobus

If you are planning to arrive via bus or subway, Washington's Metrorail subway trains run Monday through Thurday, 5:00 a.m. to midnight; Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.; Saturday, 7:00 am to 3:00 am; and Sunday, 7:00 a.m. to midnight. The closest Metrorail stop to American University is Tenleytown-AU on the red line. Public Metrobuses run on regular schedules up and down Massachusetts Avenue and stop directly front of AUWCL.

Walking from the Tenleytown-AU station

The law school building is about a one mile (1.6 kilometer) walk through a residential area from the Tenleytown-AU Metrorail station. Exit the station and proceed to Albemarle Street. Turn right onto Albemarle Street. Follow Albemarle Street to 48th Street, NW. Turn left on 48th and proceed about four blocks to Massachusetts Avenue, NW. The law school will be situated on your right. Enter it from the Massachusetts Avenue side.

Taking the American University shuttle from the Tenleytown-AU station

American University also provides free shuttle bus service to the law school from the main campus and also from the Tenleytown-AU Metrorail stop. Routes, boarding stations, and schedules are available here.


Airport, rental car & taxi information

There are three major airports in the Washington, DC area: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI). If you are traveling from one of the major airports, you have a number of transportation options. Reagan National is the only airport with direct Metrorail access.

The Airport Shuttle: Rates will vary; check online. Group rates available for groups of at least ten.

Washington Flyer: Coach service; runs from Dulles International (IAD) and stops at a Metrorail station. This is a good option if you are familiar with the Washington, DC Metro system.

Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA): Washington's public transportation system. Bus fares are typically $1.70 and $3.85 for express routes. Consider this cost-effective option when traveling from Dulles and Reagan airports. See WMATA's website and trip planner for more specific fare and route information.

Metrobus from Dulles

Exit toward the transportation area. Go to the rental car shuttles and make a right (toward where the vehicles are exiting) and find the Metrobus stop. Take the 5A bus to either the Rosslyn or the L'Enfant Plaza stations; take the Metrorail red line to the Tenleytown-AU station and walk or take the AU shuttle (instructions above).

Metrorail from BWI

Exit toward the transportation area and board the free MARC shuttle. This will take you to a commuter rail station. You will have three options: MARC and Amtrak trains or bus. All three stop at Union Station, where you will be able to catch the Metrorail red line to the Tenleytown-AU station.

Inter-city commuter train & bus information

Washington is served by Amtrak, which offers inter-city passenger rail service throughout the United States. See its website for information about services, schedules, fares and the high-speed Metroliner service between major Northeast cities. The greater metropolitan Washington region is also served by the commuter rail systems Maryland Rail Commuter (MARC) and Virginia Railway Express (VRE).

Washington is served by Greyhound and Peter Pan Bus Lines, both of which offer scheduled inter-city passenger bus service within the United States. Several other private companies and local governments provide commuter bus service into and around Washington.


Driving directions & parking information

From the northeast (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore)

Follow Interstate 95 south to Interstate 495, the Capital Beltway. Follow I-495 west to exit 39, labeled River Road (Maryland Route 190). Take River Road south toward Washington to the fifth traffic light, Goldsboro Road (Maryland Route 614). Turn right onto Goldsboro Road and proceed to the first traffic light at Massachusetts Avenue (Maryland Route 396). Turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue and continue for about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers), past Westmoreland Circle. The law school is located about .5 mile (.8 kilometer) beyond Westmoreland Circle on the left. Please see the parking information below.

From the south or west (Norfolk, Richmond, Charlottesville)

Follow Interstate 95 north or Interstate 66 east to Interstate 495, the Capital Beltway. Take I-495 west towards Tyson's Corner and Rockville. From the northwest (Western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland)

Follow Interstate 70 to Interstate 270 south. Take I-270. Where I-270 divides, follow the right-hand branch towards northern Virginia. Merge with Interstate 495, the Capital Beltway, and immediately move into the far right lane to take the next exit (39), labeled River Road (Maryland Route 190). Take River Road south toward Washington to the fifth traffic light, Goldsboro Road (Maryland Route 614). Turn right onto Goldsboro Road and proceed to the first traffic light at Massachusetts Avenue (Maryland Route 396). Parking information and regulations

Daily parking is available in the law school building garage (enter off Massachusetts Avenue, NW) for $8 per day. If you stay for fewer than three hours, the attendant will refund a prorated share of your parking fee. The garage doors are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm. However, cars already in the garage at 8:30 pm may remain until the event ends. Additional hourly parking and weekend parking is available at nearby commercial lots.

Please be aware that you are not allowed to park on any nearby neighborhood street when visiting AUWCL. You may face a $75 fine, enforced by University and law school security personnel.
