Each semester, the Center cosponsors an event with the Office of Career Services and the Office of Public Interest at American University Washington College of Law entitled The Cool Human Rights Work I Did on My Summer Vacation. The event provides an opportunity for students to come hear WCL students discuss their amazing human rights work experiences last summer. Attendees heard descriptions of how the students obtained their assignments, travel stories, and the best and worst aspects of working in the human rights field in the US and abroad.
Panelists and their placements:
Karen Woody, Office of the Prosecutor General; Kigali, Rwanda
Nicholas Vitek, American Immigration Law Foundation's Legal Action Center; Washington, DC
Jennifer Ober, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Legal System Monitoring Section; Kosovo
Kathleen Taylor, Mental Disability Advocacy Center; Budapest, Hungary
Penelope Spain, DC Public Defenders Service, Community Defender Program; Washington, DC
The Center, in conjunction with the Office of Career Services (OCS) and the Office of Public Interest (OPI), strives to assist students in gaining a better understanding of what working in human rights really means. Come hear your peers talk about the amazing human rights work they did over their summer break. Students will discuss working in the domestic and international spheres, how they got their positions, the best and worst parts of working abroad, and will offer advice on finding a great summer experience. All students were invited to attend.
