International Criminal Law Project

Sponsored by a Grant from the Open Society Institute's International Women's Program

About the Project

The Gender Jurisprudence and International Criminal Law Project is a collaborative project between the War Crimes Research Office (WCRO) and the Women and International Law Program (WILP) at the American University Washington College of Law. The goal of the project is to raise awareness of and facilitate discourse about gender-based crimes committed during times of conflict, mass violence, or repression, and the prosecution of these crimes under international law.

Gender Jurisprudence Collections

The Gender Jurisprudence Collections (GJC) was conceived in response to requests by experts in the fields of gender and international criminal law, who noted that researching the treatment of sexual and gender-based violence by the various tribunals was unduly difficult because of the absence of a central database of materials related to the investigation and prosecution of such cases.

The GJC will allow judges, practitioners, academics, and other researchers to search the jurisprudence from these tribunals for documents containing gender-specific issues and keywords. This jurisprudence will be reviewed exclusively for gender and sexual violence issues, therefore eliminating researchers' need to sift through irrelevant documents when conducting research on the treatment of gender-based issues within these bodies.

The GJC will contain judgments, decisions, orders, and other documents issued by any of these twelve international/ized courts and tribunals contained in the WCRO Jurisprudence Collections, but will not include submissions by the parties or others involved in the cases. In the future, the GJC will also feature digests of key documents, with a view to highlighting the facts, allegations, and other factors affecting the prosecution of sexual and gender-based violence.

Commentaries

In addition to the database, the Gender Jurisprudence and International Criminal Law Project is dedicated to serving the community by posting solicited commentaries containing open, honest, and grounded discussions of ideas, programs, data, laws, and policies about current feminist debates within the field of international criminal law. It is a space for respectful discussions between and among people who will be solicited for this express purpose.
