Second Assignment

First, a few houskeeping matters:

Now, the assignment:

When we first meet the legal profession (c. 1200 A.D.) in the readings from J.H. Baker's Introduction to English Legal History, it is already a flourishing fact. Its roots, however, are in the soil of pre-Conquest Britain. How did lawyering get its start?

Your task is to write a brief story (no more than a page) providing an imaginative answer to this question. Please submit your papers by Friday, January 23. You can leave a copy in Professor Jaszi's mailbox or slide it under the door of his office. Or you can fax it to him at (202)274-4130 or e-mail it to pjaszi@wcl.american.edu.

If this assignment has whetted your interest about early English law and legal institutions, you might want to take a look at Professor Robert Palmer's English Legal History materials (from the University of Houston Law School).
