2002-2003 Fact Sheet
What is the Legal Analysis Study Group?
LASG is an academic enhancement program. We offer assistance to students who need to improve writing, analysis, and research skills. These fundamental skills are essential for success in law school, in preparation for bar exams, and, ultimately, in the profession.
Whom do we serve?
LASG applicants who are accepted for enrollment, particularly in the summer workshops, are chosen based on their college and/or LSAT records, years out of school, and writing ability. Our enrollees, after serious self-assessment, must be genuinely seeking to build upon those previously-mentioned fundamental skills. This is a completely voluntary program, but once selected, we expect a high level of motivation and commitment from all participants.Who are we?
Rhonda VanLowe, the director of LASG, is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, an experienced corporate lawyer, and a former WCL Legal Methods instructor. She receives support from members of the full-time faculty; occasional outside lecturers; and Sherry Weaver, director of Diversity Services. Ms. Weaver holds a B.A. and an M.A. in English, and she teaches composition part time.What does LASG offer?
- Summer Writing Workshop
Sometimes referred to as Rhondas Boot Camp, this week-long session gives students a preview of the first year of law school by introducing them to the fundamentals of legal research, case law analysis, and legal writing.
Built around an intensive writing curriculum, the workshop requires students to write case briefs and a short legal memorandum. Computer and library training, as well as individual writing assessments, round out the curriculum.
- Academic-Year Study Group
Members of the summer workshop will form the nucleus of the more expansive academic-year study group (thus our name), which will participate in:
- large-group general topic sessions including exam prep;
- small-group, topic-specific (crafting legal arguments, bar review) sessions;
- one-on-one emergency tutorials.
