At no other time in history have people from countries around the world led such increasingly interconnected lives. This is a result of improvements in telecommunications and transportation, the reduction of barriers to international trade, and the growing role of international organizations and international law in the everyday affairs of nations. This exciting new world reality holds tremendous promise for humankind to reach even greater heights of freedom for all. At the same time, discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual preference continues to place unacceptable burdens on individuals seeking to develop their full potential.

At the Washington College of Law, we strive to create an environment that takes responsibility for overcoming the obstacles that challenge the evolution of a global community, by mirroring in our own institution the diversity existing in the world. We believe that creating such a diverse community in our midst is key to combating societal inequities that stem from a lack of intercultural, interreligious, interracial, or other understanding. The demographic profile of the WCL class that began their studies in the fall of 2005, for example, is nationally and internationally diverse and reflects 37% minority representation and 54% women.

We are proud of the degree of diversity we have achieved at WCL, a law school that appreciates and values our differences for the benefit and betterment of all. Of course, there is always work to be done. So we encourage you to visit us, to ask questions, to attend a class. Your own contributions are essential to our tireless efforts to support a community that reflects the mosaic of the world around us.
