Arbitration in Latin America and Annulment Proceedings
April 26, 2011 - 2:30 P.M. - 5:30 P.M.

This conference, co-organized by the Center on International Commercial

2011 International Arbitration Summer Program
May 31 – June 16, 2011

As you know, American University Washington College of Law offers a summer session on international commercial arbitration in Washington, DC. Our three-week intensive program is designed to provide practitioners critical skills training in international commercial arbitration -- and you can also earn CLE credits (12 CLE credits per course, 14 if NY).

Course offerings in English Include: Nuts and Bolts of International Commercial Arbitration; Investor-State Arbitration; Advanced Seminar: Practical Skills and Cross-Examination in International Arbitration; International Arbitration and Choice-of-Law Issues; and Contributions of the ICC Court of Arbitration to the Practice of International Commercial Arbitration.

Eighth Annual Seminar: How to Handle Agency and Distribution Issues in International Commercial Arbitration
October 11– 13, 2011

This seminar will feature a mock case that will be discussed principally from the perspective of the Rules of Arbitration of the American Arbitration Association's International Centre for Dispute Resolution. Through dynamic interactive lectures and scenario-based exercises, participants will be taught skills, strategies, and tactics for successfully conducting international arbitration cases on various factual and legal bases.  Co-sponsors:  American Arbitration Association, International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes. International Commercial Arbitration Brief
We are happy to announce the first issue of the International Commercial Arbitration Brief. The Brief is a student publication of the Washington College of Law produced
with the assistance of the Center for International Commercial Arbitration. The
purpose of the Brief is to provide timely insights into developments in the field and to highlight trends and practices occurring around the globe. The Brief welcomes pieces from both practitioners and students.

The Brief will publish one issue per semester with a general focus on international commercial arbitration, but will also encompass related areas.  The brief seeks to provide practitioners, academics, and WCL students, an opportunity to collaborate
on and publish articles and resource materials on international arbitration.

2011 Moot Competitions

Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court Competition

Third-year law students Katie Coniglio, Brian Kotick, Willa Obel, and Joe Schlingbaum represented the Washington College of Law at the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Competition which took place March 14-18, 2011. Twenty-seven teams from countries all over the world participated in the moot.  After the general rounds, WCL advanced to the round of sixteen and was ranked third in the competition.  Ultimately, WCL placed
fifth overall in the competition. 

Coaches included: Danielle Morris of Baker Botts and Neale Bergman of the Office
of International Claims and Investment Disputes, United States Department of State. At
WCL, Bjorn Arp (Visiting Scholar) Sana Onayeva (SJD student) and Visiting Professor Tamara Takacs, supported the team.

Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition

Adam Burrowbridge, Diana Pak, Melissa Roca, and David Teslicko represented WCL in the Willem C. Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition which took place in Hong-Kong April 4-10, 2011. David Teslicko received the Neil Kaplan Award for Best
Oralist and Melissa Roca received an Honorable Mention for Best Oralist. The team made it to the “Sweet Sixteen” out of a total of 87 teams from around the world.

The Vis (East) Moot is the sister competition to the Vis Moot, which takes place in Vienna this week. Both competitions are based on the same problem, which this year concerns a contract for the supply of squid, providing for arbitration under the rules of the Chamber of Arbitration of Milan.

Coaches include: James Boykin, attorney at Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP; Jennifer Toole,
attorney-adviser at the U.S. Department of State in the Office of the Legal Adviser and WCL alumna (2001); and J. Hess, associate at DLA Piper, WCL alumni (2009) and former student participant in the Willem C. Vis Competition.
