Stanimir Alexandrov

Stanimir Alexandrov, a partner in the Washington, DC office of Sidley Austin LLP, focuses his practice in the areas of international dispute resolution, including international arbitration, and disputes before the World Trade Organization, as well as international business transactions and trade and investment policy. He has advised and represented private and sovereign clients in arbitration under investment treaties, and private parties and governments in WTO disputes. Mr. Alexandrov is appointed to the Panel of Arbitrators and the Panel of Conciliators of the World Bank’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). Mr. Alexandrov was Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Bulgaria in Washington, D.C., where he negotiated trade and investment agreements and worked closely with the World Bank and the IMF on technical assistance projects. Mr. Alexandrov, a Bulgarian national, holds both Russian and U.S. law degrees.
Mark D. Beckett

Mark Beckett is co-chair of Latham & Watkins' International Litigation and Arbitration practice and has broad experience in the resolution of complex international disputes through arbitration, litigation, mediation and negotiation. He has significant experience in project construction disputes, disputes arising under long-term purchase agreements, complex commercial, acquisition and joint venture disputes, and disputes involving demand guarantees, corporate guarantees and state undertakings. Mr. Beckett is also experienced in disputes involving the expropriation of assets by sovereigns giving rise to state responsibility under international law and has represented clients claiming coverage under political risk insurance policies issued by government entities and private underwriters. He also advises clients on issues of contract drafting, interpretation and enforcement. Mr. Beckett has been named as a leading practitioner in international arbitration in the Chambers & Partners Global Directory for 2004-05.
Marinn Carlson

Marinn Carlson is a partner in the Washington, DC office of Sidley Austin LLP. She focuses her practice in international dispute settlement, with an emphasis on trade policy and investment disputes, including the WTO and investor-state arbitration. She has also represented clients in U.S. litigation with international ramifications, and as amici curiae in foreign affairs, intellectual property, and Commerce Clause cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and various courts of appeal. Before entering private practice, Ms. Carlson clerked for Judge José A. Cabranes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She also worked in several organizations with a focus on trade and its intersection with environmental policy. She has a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth, a master degree from Princeton and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
Dr. Ronald Goodman

Dr. Ronald Goodman is a partner in the firm’s Washington office of Foley Hoag LLP. He concentrates his practice in international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, with a focus on commercial, investor-state, project, energy, and construction matters. Formerly co-chair of Winston & Strawn’s international arbitration practice, Mr. Goodman represents foreign government and corporate clients in international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution proceedings before international tribunals, courts, and commissions. He also advises governments with respect to law reform, restructuring, treaties, privatization, and project finance matters. Mr. Goodman has been involved in numerous international arbitration proceedings, including those before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), United Nations Compensation Commission, London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), European Development Fund, International Arbitral Centre of the Federal Economic Chamber Vienna, as well as various U.S. tribunals. A multi-lingual practitioner, he has handled cases involving claims by clients located throughout the world, in both developed countries and emerging markets. Mr. Goodman is a member of numerous international arbitration associations, has written articles related to international arbitration, and has spoken widely on the subject. Mr. Goodman earned his juris doctor from Columbia University School of Law, his doctorate from Princeton University and his bachelor's degree from Cornell University.
Jean Kalicki

Jean Kalicki, Counsel in Arnold & Porter's litigation practice, specializes in international arbitration and transnational litigation. In arbitration practice, she has represented sovereign governments, international organizations and private companies in a wide range of domestic and international proceedings before the American Arbitration Association, the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, and various ad-hoc tribunals. Ms. Kalicki is an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University Law Center, teaching "Litigation Practice in International Arbitration," and serves as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and its International Centre for Dispute Resolution, as well as for the New York Stock Exchange and National Association of Securities Dealers. She is a five-time Chair or co-Chair of the D.C. Bar's International Dispute Resolution Committee, a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration's Task Force on Reducing Costs and Time in Complex Arbitration, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration, the ADR Advisory Committee of the International Law Institute, and the Paris-based International Arbitration Institute. She is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.
Jennifer Haworth McCandless

Jennifer Haworth McCandless, a partner in the Washington, DC office of Sidley Austin LLP, focuses her practice in the area of international dispute settlement with particular emphasis on matters regarding the World Trade Organization and all areas of domestic court litigation involving federal trade practice, including classification, countervailing duty and antidumping law. Prior to entering private practice, Ms. McCandless clerked for two years for Chief Judge Gregory W. Carman at the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York. In addition, Ms. McCandless served as a legal intern with the U.S. Trade Representative's (USTR) Office of General Counsel in Washington, D.C., and with the USTR's Office in Geneva, Switzerland. She has also served as a legal intern at the United Nations in New York and has worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C. Ms. McCandless has a bachelor’s degree from Whitman College, a master degree from Harvard University, a master in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
Dr. Horacio Grigera Naón

Dr. Horacio Grigera Naón, is Director of the International Arbitration Program at American University Washington College of Law, serves as an independent international arbitrator and consultant on business and international law matters, and is former Secretary General of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. He has been a practitioner in the field of international commercial arbitration and international business law for over twenty-five years. Dr. Grigera Naón has published and lectured widely on these topics, including a book on "Choice-of-Law Problems in International Commercial Arbitration" (1992) and lectures at the Hague Academy of International Law (2001) on the same topic. He is also a member of the American Law Institute, a a member of the Advisory Board of The Institute for Transnational Arbitration, a former Special Counsel with White & Case LLP and a former Senior Counsel with the International Finance Corporation in Washington D.C. He holds LLM and SJD degrees from Harvard Law School, LLB and LLD degrees from the School of Law of the University of Buenos Aires and is a member of the Argentine Federal, New York, District of Columbia, and United States Supreme Court Bars.
Professor Loukas Mistelis

Loukas Mistelis is the Clive M. Schmitthoff Professor of Transnational Commercial Law and Arbitration at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, where he is Director of Studies of the School of International Arbitration. He is also an adjunct Professor of Law at Pace University, School of Law and he teaches at the University of London LLM program. He also maintains a selective arbitration and consulting practice which focuses on international commercial and investment disputes, secured transactions and complex contractual matters. Mr. Mistelis has published various pieces, focusing on the internationalism of commercial arbitration, investment arbitration and harmonization of arbitration procedure. Mr. Mistelis received his LLB at Athens, his Certificate in International and Comparative Human Rights at Strasbourg, his Magister Legum Europae and Dr. Iuris at Hanover and his Certificate in Japanese International Trade Law at Keio.
David M. Orta

David Orta is a partner with Arnold & Porter LLP. He is a commercial and product liability litigator and trial lawyer with significant experience in international arbitrations, and is a member of Arnold & Porter’s international arbitration practice group. Mr. Orta has extensive experience in investor-state arbitration under bilateral investment treaties administered under the auspices of the International Centre for the Resolution of Investment Disputes (ICSID). He also has handled arbitrations administered under UNCITRAL and ICDR (AAA). With Quratulann Khalid Hussain, he recently co-wrote The Crossroads Between Enforcement and Execution of Arbitration Awards and Sovereign Immunity-A Primer for In-House Counsel, Spring 2006, International Chamber of Commerce Members' Handbook, UK Edition. Mr. Orta also handles international litigation for U.S. and foreign clients. His practice includes significant experience litigating and trying pharmaceutical and medical device product liability cases, including class actions, and mass torts. He received his B.A. from Tulane University, and his JD from Stetson University College of Law.
Elliot E. Polebaum

Elliot E.Polebaum leads Fried Frank's International Arbitration practice group and is co-chair of the Firm's Washington,DC litigation department. While resident in the Washington office, he divides his time between the Washington,DC and Paris offices. Mr Polebaum concentrates in international arbitration (handling cases throughout the world) and complex civil litigation in US courts. Mr. Polebaum has appeared before tribunals throughout the world and frequently serves as an arbitrator in disputes administered by the ICC and ICDR, as well as in ad hoc cases. He also has experience representing clients in complex civil litigation in US courts. He is Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center, where he teaches international arbitration. Mr. Polebaum has written extensively on a variety of international litigation, arbitration, and intellectual property issues and is a regular speaker on these topics. Nancy M.Thevenin

Nancy M. Thevenin is deputy director of arbitration and ADR for North America for the ICC International Court of Arbitration in New York. In that capacity, she advises North American attorneys and companies on all phases of ICC arbitration, as well as on the ICC Appointing Authority, Pre-Arbitral Referee, ADR, Dispute Board and Expertise Rules. Before joining ICC in 2004, Ms. Thevenin practiced with a boutique law firm for international litigation and arbitration in Miami, Florida, specializing in international commercial litigation, international arbitration, creditors’ rights and business torts. Ms. Thevenin currently serves as a vice chair of the Latin America and Caribbean Committee, vice chair of the Young Lawyers Interest Network, and as the law liaison to the ICC Court for the American Bar Association’s Section of International Law. She is a member of the executive council of the International Law Section of the Florida Bar, vice chair of the Arbitration Committee for the Inter-American Bar Association, and co-chair of Arbitration and ADR Committee of the International Law and Practice Section of the New York State Bar Association. Ms. Thevenin holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in history and Spanish literature. She received her law degree from Tulane Law School and obtained certificates in European legal practice and in commercial arbitration.
David E. Wagoner

David E. Wagoner of Seattle, Washington, serves as arbitrator, mediator and consultant in international and domestic disputes. He has been appointed to arbitration panels throughout the world including the AAA's International Panel and most recently to the CIETAC panel in China. Mr. Wagoner has served on the faculty of various arbitration workshops, and has published numerous articles on international arbitration, most recently Japan Becomes a Friendly Place for International Arbitration, TDM Volume 3, issue #04 - July 2006. He was a partner of Perkins Coie, Seattle from 1965 to 1996, specializing in international and complex commercial litigation. Mr. Wagoner graduated from Yale University with a B.A. and from the University of Pennsylvania with an L.L.B.
