Legal Eagle Vol. 23 - August 2010

Dear WCL Alumni,

Please join us October 22 and 23 at the law school!

We welcome the classes of 1985 (25 year reunion) and 2000 (ten year reunion), as well as invite ALL alumni to join us for events that relate back to your time at Washington College of Law.  This year, Reunion is not only about your graduation year, but it is also about your interests, your experiences and your memories, no matter what year you graduated.

If you participated in, or are interested in Clinics, Journals, or the International Legal Studies or Law and Government LLM programs, please join us for reunion weekend.

Curious? Interested in helping shape the weekend? Join the Alumni Committee. To find out more about how you can help and to get other reunion weekend details, visit the Reunion 2010 webpages, or email us at reunion@wcl.american.edu.

In addition, American University undergraduate/graduate programs is offering additional reunion events for all 1980's classes as well as five (2005) and ten (2000) year reunions that same weekend. You can enjoy the best of both worlds. Click here if you would like to see what is going on and/or RSVP.

Trial Advocacy Program

Trial Advocacy Program announces new LL.M. in Advocacy

The new Master of Laws, LLM, in Advocacy, administered by the Trial Advocacy Program will launch in January, 2011. The program offers students and alumni an opportunity to pursue graduate legal work to enhance their legal advocacy skills both in and out of the courtroom. It is a 24-credit degree program which students can choose to pursue full-time (and complete in one year) or part-time (and complete at their own pace, usually in two years). The Advocacy LLM Program combines a rigorous academic component and a wide range of practical litigation courses for students to improve their technical trial skills, learn new litigation strategies and tools, and strengthen persuasive abilities in the pretrial and trial settings. Important focuses of WCL's Advocacy LLM Program are the use of modern technology in 21st century litigation and legal ethics, including a required course, Ethics for Trial Lawyers. Optional credits include approved legal writing projects, teaching opportunities, and supervised externships. For additional information, visit the LLM website at www.wcl.american.edu/trial/.

Office of Career and Professional Development

Alumni Career Development Listserv

The Alumni Career Development Listserv launched by OCPD offers, alumni a forum through which to announce career-related events, programs, networking opportunities and job leads that might be of general interest to the alumni community, as well as to solicit job-search advice, information, and referrals within particular geographic regions or practice areas. (Note: please continue to submit formal job postings through CareerLink to ensure maximum exposure to the WCL student and alumni communities.). The listserv will be moderated to ensure appropriate usage. To subscribe, please email Alumni Counselor Matthew Pascocello at mpasco@wcl.american.edu.

2010 Fall Recruitment Program

OCPD is accepting employer registrations for the 2010 Fall Recruitment Program, which takes place from mid-August through November. The program, which is free of cost, is an excellent way to highlight summer opportunities and post-graduate positions with law firms, government agencies, nonprofits, the judiciary, and other employers. Employers may register to receive resumes through the on-campus interview process, resume collection, or direct application. Registration forms and recruiting brochures are available online by clicking here. For more information or to participate in the program, please contact the Office of Career and Professional Development, at careerdevelopment@wcl.edu or (202) 274-4090.

As always, if you know of any opportunities for recent graduates or other alumni, please forward that information to jobs@wcl.american.edu.

Consider Becoming an Alumni Mentor!

One of the best ways for students and alumni to get the inside scoop about employment trends, opportunities, and information about what it is like to practice a particular area of law, or with a particular employer, is by asking alumni who have "been there" and "done that." WCL Alumni Mentors play an integral role in affording students and fellow alumni the opportunity to conduct networking and informational interviews. In a competitive marketplace, the need for such valuable contacts and opportunities cannot be overstated. Statistically speaking, more lawyers get jobs through networking than from any other job search method! The Office of Career & Professional Development encourages you to enroll today to be a Mentor by contacting alumni counselor Matthew Pascocello at 202-274-4092 or mpasco@wcl.american.edu.
